Butterfly

This butterfly, which is a blackwork design by Tanja Berlin, appeared in ‘Classic Inspirations’ magazine.  I have wanted to do it for some time.  My original thoughts were to do it in white on Midnight Blue.  When I got round to looking at the fabric I had bought it was not the colour I had expected, so I had to have a rethink. My next thought was pastel shades.  Then I decided to read the instructions, and realised that two colours was probably the maximum I could use without making it look messy.

The effect I was trying to get is a butterfly at dusk.  I decided on a soft lemon shade, and the swirl is a very pale blue/grey.

I have also omitted a wing, as I really didn’t like it, and I am pleased with the end result.  It is probably going into a matt silver frame.  The next project also has an animal theme….

The problem with going on holiday…

Well, as this post is a tale of woe, and Wimbledon is on, I thought I would put a nice photo in at the top. I have just picked these from the garden.

As I was saying, the problem with going on holiday is that I put things away, and what happens when we do that? – we can’t find them when we come back.

I finished a blackwork pincushion before we went on holiday.  It needed the cord sewn round the edge.  I had tried to do this twice before, and it did not work out.  This time, is adopted the K.I.S.S. principle, and set to stitching it without pinning or tacking it first. and it was so easy!

Here it is.  I am quite pleased with it. I am not too sure about the bow, but I have dabbed the ends with Fraycheck, so it should be ok.

But now for the unfortunate bit – the cushion.  I attached to cord to the right side of the front of the cushion,  then cut out the fabric for the back.  Next I wanted to attach the zip.  But it was nowhere to be found.   Presumably it is in a ‘safe place’, but it is not with all my other zips.  So the bottom line is, I will have to buy another when I go shopping this afternoon, and you will have to wait a day or two before I get to it, as I hope to be watching my son play in a cricket match tomorrow. It is forecast to be hot and sunny, so I am really looking forward to it.

Puzzled

Blackwork

This is the best detailed photo I’ve taken.  But what has surprised me is that I took it from a distance of 18″.  Back to the instruction book for the camera.

In order to try to look at photos direct from the camera to the tv screen, I had to pull out the computer table, to disconnect the camera cable.   I wasn’t surprised to find a pencil, a peanut and some dust, but how on earth did an embroidery needle get so far under there?

Also, I tried to take the Or Nue which I have already photgraphed out of its frame, so that I don’t get reflections, and it won’t come out.  Why not?   Watch this space!

Or Nue goldwork and Blackwork

Not quite traditional

This was a pattern from Zweigart, but I didn’t want to do it in black.  So I decided that shades of blue would look good with my pink evenweave fabric – voila!

This was started at an Or Nue workshop at the Embroiderers’ Guild.  I didn’t really take to Or Nue, we have a bit of a mixture of techniques here.

We have a goldwork  workshop in a few months, and I am hoping that I will be able to get a place on it.  I have a project in mind, and a bit of tuition and inspiration wouldn’t go amiss
